Page 1 of 6 Amidst the sudden phenomenon of box-office movies such as Transformers and Die Hard, I have decided to come up with a compilation of the best (gay) movies I have seen through time. In fact, I am already in the middle of writing a review for TRANSFORMERS when out of the blue, migraine striked and realized how shitty my review is . . . then bells came ringing. So, I decided to browse through my DVD rack and recall the movies that I would want to share with you guys! These movies touch our hearts and remind us of the good and bad times of gay life. Some of these gay films were mainstream and others independent productions, but they've all become gay classics.
10. BROKENHEARTS CLUB (2000) Written by Greg Berlanti, this movie is not something that I would really recommend . . . but there's a certain zest in this movie that makes it pretty much special and still worthy to watch. The Brokenhearts Club is a frothy slice of life in gay subculture of West Hollywood. Though the script is clever, it fails both as comedy and as a melodrama. Billed as the "first mainstream gay movie", the story revolves around a circle of gay friends, equally treated and justified. The wide-array of characters makes the movie more realistic, although it really reminds of "Gimik" or "Dawson's Creek". The hottie in the movie is no less than Clark Kent himself: DEAN CAIN! 9. PARAISO NI EFREN (1999) Social worker Melvin meets handsome hustler Efren and, after purchasing his services, the two become friends. Later, when Melvin's mother dies, he moves in with Efren and his three female roomates, as the household becomes a makeshift family for him. A relationship burgeons between the two when and Melvin moves into Efren's house. There are three women living in the house: Efren's lover, Ana; his sister, Rina, and lastly Magda, a dowdy laundry worker. The close proximity of the occupants makes for a volatile situation. Written by Jun Lana and directed my Maryo J. delos Reyes, the movie can be blant at times but it definitely gives an honest feel as it conveys the story of the two major characters. Something worthy to mention is Anna Capri's display of her acting prowess in this movie. The hottie in the movie is ANTON BERNARDO. 8. TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING JULIE NEWMAR (1995)
Nothing can be gayer than this movie! A fantastic array of color, music and production design, and the biggest wow factor is the main cast composed of Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo playing as drag queens from New York!
The trio hits the road for Hollywood from New York and gets sidetracked in a tiny Midwest town where they become the center of attention. Using their infallible sense of style and fashion, they set about righting various wrongs and generally improving the town. They do makeovers on the women and whip the dirty, abusive men into shape. By the time they leave, everything is wonderful. Obviously, that story line is a lot to swallow, but it works well enough as an outrageous fantasy. The story also avoids the whole issue of gay sex. If you can't stomach the idea of drag queens as societal role models you probably won't like this film, however. But to sum it all up . . . the film is nothing but simply FABULOUS! 7. PHILADELPHIA (1993) I really liked this movie, especially for Tom Hank's extremely moving performance as someone dying of AIDS. To be honest, I would never know about this movie had I not seen it on HBO one weekday afternoon.
There are many parts of the movie that I will remember for a long time, but most of all is the courtroom scene where Tom Hanks testifies in his own behalf. Hanks's performance deserves an Oscar, but many other parts of that scene were outstanding. His makeup throughout the movie is chillingly realistic especially how pale he looks at court. I hate cute camera angles, but the choice of having the camera tilted whenever it shows what Hanks is seeing makes you feel sick too. Almost all the ups and downs of gay life has been packed in this movie. From the simple and harsh realities of descrimination to the horrifying case of AIDS. What I find the cutest in the movie is Antonio Bandera's role as Tom Hanks' lover. I wouldn't forget the hospital scene where Antonio Banderas, being the lover, goes over concerned and goes berserk because Tom Hanks is not given too much attention by the doctors. 6. HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2001) "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is the kind of title that brings a smile to the face, especially for people who have seen the movie, who will forever grin whenever it comes to mind. It shows all the promise of becoming a cult movie, with the polish, colour and textual fluidity of a studio comedy but a distinctly underground sensibility and countless memorable moments. Written, directed and starred by John Cameron Mitchell, the movie, which is also based from Mitchell's off-broadway hit, is fantabulous and mind-blowing. It revolves around the concept of the "origin of love", and Hedwig's search for absolution. Hedwig is an east german transexual who was able to come to the states because of an American GI. His first love is undoubtedly rock and roll, which is the heart and soul of the movie. He then, meets Tommy, a young boy whom he jerked off while babysitting Tommy's little sister. Tommy became his protege but unfortunately, after several years, Tommy became a rock star using most of Hedwig's songs.
I'm not sure if my description of the movie is effectively capturing its atmosphere. I'm not sure what description could. But there's only one thing I could say though, mind-blowing! Great music . . . great cinematography . . . great in production design!!! 5. PRIEST (1995)
"Priest" has everything you could possibly ask for in a movie that seems hell-bent on decrying the very nature of the Catholic religion's primary beliefs. It deals with the ever-aging notion of celibacy within the church, portraying its characters as anything but. It features issues of sexuality- homosexual, heterosexual, and incestual (oh, my!)- in prominent positions throughout the story, and is unafraid of exploring them in open, honest, and forthright manners, to the point that we watch as two men, one of them a priest, make love to one another. The fact that the movie caused a ruckus amongst several religious groups during its theatrical release in 1995 is a testament to the potency of its subject matter; what's even more interesting is how many of those same people opposed the film without even having seen it, which seemed to reinforce the movie's general theme of the dangers of religious fanaticism.
I saw this movie when I was fifteen or sixteen (in VHS) and it rocked the hell out of me! Perhaps this movie is one of strongest influences in my homosexuality. Whew! But above anything else, the lead actor LINUS ROACHE is a cutie! 4. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005) I guess there's no need for me to expound anything about this movie. All I can say is that, I find this the best movie that Ang Lee directed. He gave justice to Anne Proulx's short story. I love the cinematography and the acting of Heath Ledger was brilliant. Ang Lee made the main character of the movie, the mountain, speak for itself! Dang! But up to this moment, I can't still imagine two cowboys doin it . . . 3. ANGLES IN AMERICA (2003) Produced and released by HBO Films, Kushner adapted his own play into this six-hour tele-film examining Aids and sexuality in America during the Reagan years. It's an ambitious piece, beautifully filmed by Nichols with moments of real power scattered through it. But it's watered down by Kushner's refusal to make it cinematic by cutting down the surreal excesses that diffuse and weaken the engaging central storyline.
I haven't slept for almost a week after I've viewed this film. It is strange, obscure, eccentric and up to some points -- WEIRD! But nothing can take the artistic integrity of this film! I am struck in awe! Aside from that, the powerhouse cast of Al Pacino, Meryll Streep, Emma Thomson Jeffrey Wright gave so much justice to the story and the message that this film conveys! Nothing but heavenly! 2. ANG PAGDADALAGA NI MAXIMO OLIVEROS (2005) Second to the top of my list! Written by Michiko Yamamoto and directed by Aureus Solito, no doubt this indie film have taken home a handful of international awards. It's just a pity that other countries have appreciated this movie more as compared to how it was marketed locally. This movie made me look back, remember and feel the same old feeling of kilig and being in love. This film is nothing but honesty . . . looking at the plot and the subplots . . . it's almost flawless. This is the kind of film that major production companies should produce! 1. A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD (2004) Based from the novel of the Pulitzer Prize winner, Michael Cunningham, I would have never known and seen this movie have my girl friend not lent me a sack of pirated DVDs that she bought from Dubai. I find this movie as the finest cinematic study of relationships to come along in quite some time. If prose can ever be characterized as "poetic", Cunningham's would fit the bill; the language nearly bursts with metaphor and emotion, powerfully magnifying every interaction. A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD is a contemplation about the potentiality of our existence, of the possibilities inherent in living a life...the idea that not just anything can happen, but everything can happen. And yet, Cunningham is not simply awash in a gorgingly potent worldview. Even with all of life's bounty, he is keenly aware that human existence is solitary, and that our need for contact and love from others compels us through our days. As one of the characters says in A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD, we are all both beautiful and alone. It isn't quite a contradiction, or an oxymoron. It is, simply and magnificently, a revelation of reality.
As childhood friends in Cleveland, the orphaned Bobby (Colin Farrell) and the geekish Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) bonded tightly; Bobby was even taken in after his parents' deaths by Jonathan's parents (Sissy Spacek and Matt Frewer). After high school, however, Jonathan left for New York, where he moved in with Clare (Robin Wright Penn). Bobby, lost and alone, evenutally follows to New York, where he begins a relationship with Clare, who is still in love with the now-openly-gay Jonathan. Chronicling over a dozen years in their lives, A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD measures the struggles of these three people to find a balance and future together as they grow up, change, and metastasize into a configuration outside of the mainstream...but not outside of a personal and recontexualized normalcy. Perhaps the biggest revelation for audiences will be Colin Farrell, who proves himself to be a much better actor that his hunky good looks or clunky blockbuster resume (Daredevil, Phone Booth, Minority Report) would indicate. As Bobby, Farrell finds the courage to wholly inhabit a gentle, slightly dimwitted, and ultimately soft persona -- Bobby is the antithesis of an action star role. His natural handsomeness is muted by his injured eyes and timid gestures, which make him a most endearingly sensitive lunkhead. For a Hollywood player on the rise as Farrell is, it is a surprising career move and an exceptionally commendable performance, neither show-offy nor self-aggrandizing. Male actors don't win awards for playing soft, but in a more perfect world, Farrell's performance would be rewarded with an Oscar. Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register.
