Remembering Storm of Xmen

Mga 2 am na nang magkaayaan kami ni Josh na lumabas ng Midnight Shift, isang tsipipay na comedy bar sa may Maceda, along Espana. Kung tutuusin hindi naman talaga cheap o customer-friendly ang price ng naturang bar, just that I find its frequenters rather cheap. Aside from the said bar's good stand-up gay comedians with their new materials, I can't find another reason why I still frequent that place. Well convenience-wise siguro as sobrang lapit lang nito from our apartment unit sa Sisa St. I'm an X-men fanatic not because needless to say, I'm an Xman, or a mutant in that sense, but because I consider Stan Lee, its creator a genius of sort. I remember nung bata ako, I used to maneuver some childish and awkward fighting moves in front of our TV set in the living room, along with my playmates in the neighborhood pag narinig na ang opening theme song ng Xmen, something that goes like paulit ulit na tanananan tanan – tanananan tanan – tanananan tanan - tanan. In our neighborhood, we were the first to own a tv set kaya naman sa amin nakikipanood ang mga kalaro ko at pagtapos na ang Xmen episode for that day, para bang routinary nang mag-uunahan kami sa front yard ng bahay namin to bring to life the episode we just watched. Siyempre mga bata pa kami nun (I'm now 24) so kokonti lang ang naiintindihan namin sa mga English dialogues. Di pa nun uso ang pagdu-dub sa Tagalog. The male characters like Wolverine, Cyclops and Gambit were all time favorites and almost everybody wanted to assume their characters in our child's play. Lalaki lahat kami nun so parating agawan sa mga male-characters. I can't remember who laid down this rule but we'd always had this unwritten law that the first one to shout out loud the name of an Xmen character he wants to assume automatically gets to play that character. Pag nagkaroon ng competition, let's say someone else also wants to play that character, then he should settle for another character, which is also subject for bidding. Si Ian ang madalas parating Wolverine kasi naman bago pa man ang laro, may hawak-hawak na siyang dalawang mahabang piraso ng walis tingting na pinuputol niya't ginagawang parang sa mga claws ni Wolvie. To the relief of my playmates, I was always Storm, the white-haired dark weather goddess. One competition less sa mga male characters. One thing they didn't know is that she was a personal pick of mine. Lucky me, nobody wanted to be called bakla kaya wala akong ka kompetensiya. Well, I think I gave Storm justice as nobody else could have played her character better than I did. Dahil sa letseng Storm na yan, natuto akong umirap at the tender age of 8 whenever I used to imagine myself summoning winds, tornadoes, and lightning to defeat my playmates. At an early age, may concept na siguro ata ako ng feminism. I was a Storm advocate pag pinagtatalunan na kung sino ba talaga ang most powerful among the Xmen. Of course, nobody believed me so it had to be proven in a mock tournament fight. I can say na I had a height advantage. Ako ata ang pinakamatangkad. Whey they points this out as the sole reason bakit ako ang parating champion sa mock tournament, I always say na talaga namang matangkad si Storm. My playmates could execute stunts like back flips but only me could deliver a perfect 10 cartwheel, which I used as both offensive and defensive tactic. God hath no mercy na once my big foot struck an opponent's neck or head while executing a cartwheel, which always send them home to their mommas crying and sometimes, scurrying like frightened little monkeys. Couldn't stand his defeat from a sissyboy, one playmate would argue na hindi naman daw nagca-cartwheel si Storm sa Xmen. Si Jojo ata yun, aka Gambit, first cousin ni Ian. Then I would counter point blank na madaya siya dahil may bamboo pole siya sa mga laro namin at minsan, nakakatama sa mata ang mga barahang binabato niya sa amin. Eventhough some of my playmates incoporate dirty tactics, Storm always wins. Normal na siguro sa mga bata ang mangolekta ng spiders at ibahay ang mga ito sa isang posporo, but I was different as I gave them names. I used to name my pet spiders Storm, Rogue or Psylocke. Dumadayo kami ng barangay to pit our spideys against other children's spidey to test their strength, minsan may betting of money. To the utter disbelief of my friends and other children alike, I would shout “Go Storm!” or “Go Rogue!” pag ako na ang lumalaban and I were rooting for my spideys. Now this bar, Midnight Shift, makes me remember my early childhood memories of Xmen because of the Pink Community who frequents there. Gaya kanina, I saw a Mystique drag queen, doing a Mi Chico Latina number, a gay Blob, obviously someone obese, singing Destiny's Child's Stand Up for Love, a gay Sabretooth, a Beast, someone bakulaw, etc. Kulang na lang siguro si Horseyman or Horseywoman, kung meron mang ganun sa X-men. And there was also this gay comedian whom I tagged Barney, for obvious reason that he looks like a dinosaur.
