I can recall the first time I saw him; I was just standing there in front of the photocopying machine, I looked towards the door and I saw him. His gaze was piercing. There stands the most handsome Hispanic guy that I've ever seen in my entire life. He looked good and pretty much reminded me of Arab men. My eyes met his and then the instant attraction. There was something then but I wasn’t sure exactly what. I could feel that like me, he is gay or at the very least is attracted to men, but I couldn’t confirm it. Later on, through my investigative prowess, I was able to find out that he works for the company and that he is from Cuba, etc. But most of all, I was right to think that there is a distinct possibility that he is gay, as apparently most of the people who’d worked with him in the previous projects were suspicious as well. So a year and a few months passed, we still both work for the same company, he is based in another country in the Middle East while I am still here in UAE. I have had dinner with him together with some of our other colleagues; we always tease each other but nothing more than that. To be honest about it, I like him a lot and I would love to have him for a friend or even more than that but then again we’re in a rut. Recent events began to unfold that eventually lead me back to my earlier suspicions. One of his best friends transferred to UAE. And I started observing them; with his friend I can easily conclude that he is gay. He is just so transparent no matter how much he tries to hide the fact, he just couldn’t keep it a secret. Then last week, unexpectedly, I received an SMS from him, telling me that we should hang out and go to karaoke one of these days, to which I replied in the affirmative. I was surprised to receive that message. Then came Tuesday of this week, he had to go back to the hotel and there were no available drivers, so as a favor I was asked to drop him. Along the way, he began to tease me again, asking me who I am sleeping with within the company, to which I replied that I don’t sleep around and that these Europeans do not exactly belong to my “market”. I regaled him with stories about my escapades in the Middle East, the men that I’ve met, and how as a matter of personal policy, I do not meet with the same guy twice. Once we’ve done “it” then most likely I won’t be meeting him again. He just snorted at the thought and laughed at me, calling me “slutty” a label which I no longer contest. During the ride he posed a question which nearly shocked me but not quite actually. He asked me if I think my boss is gay, to which I replied that I wouldn’t say anything incriminating. Then as a follow up question, he asked me if I think he is gay, I nearly drove into a post – not really, I am just exaggerating – I couldn’t find the right words to say, I wanted to say “yes and I hope so” but I didn’t. I just shrugged it off, as if it doesn’t matter and I just introduced a new topic of conversation. After dropping him off, I couldn’t forget what he asked me so I decided to send him an SMS. I told him that my answer to his question is “I think so, but I am not sure”. Not even a minute; my phone was ringing with the screen showing his name as the caller. I answered and he asked me if it matters to me, if his being gay bothers me. I told him that it doesn’t change anything, not one bit. I like him regardless of who he is or what he represents so I simply told him that I love him. I am not “in” love with him, I just love him for his courage and bravery, and I love him for choosing to tell me, over anyone else in the company. We still need to find time to talk about it, but we were teasing each other about “cruising” and where we can do this in the Middle East. I told him that I know that he is an expert cruising in Europe but probably he doesn’t know anything about Middle East, so I will just lead the way. I don’t know where this will lead to in the future, I am just happy that for now he trusted me enough to share with me his “secret’. Sometimes it takes a while to find enough courage to come “out”.
